Stainless Steel Pickling – Passivating
Stainless steel pickling is typically done as part of the passivation process. Pickling of stainless steel removes weld scale, black oxides and burn marks from welding, all of which can't be addressed through passivation. Pickling is usually conducted before passivation.
Pickling uses much higher concentrations of different acids than passivation. Passivating stainless steel removes microscopic iron particles, which prompts its chromium to react with oxygen and form an invisible, protective layer. Steel qualifies as "stainless" when it has a chromium content of more than 10.5 percent.
